The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact throughout the United States on a variety of levels. One area affected, in particular, is the workforce. While many people were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work at home, others lost their jobs. Many businesses have not been allowed to stay open at all, or could not survive after being forced to close for an extended period.
If you were unhappy in your former job, felt trapped, or were uncertain about what you wanted to do as a career, there can be an upside to losing your job. You now have the opportunity to branch out and try something new!
We are often afraid to leave our current position as it is familiar and comes with a guaranteed paycheck. Forced unemployment is the perfect opportunity to explore other careers that may be of interest. It doesn’t mean you must stick with this new career, but it is a great time to try something new and to discover what truly brings you happiness (and a paycheck!).
Skilled Laborers are Needed
There was a time when skilled laborers were highly valued. Few people went to college in the past. But, there was a sudden push for every high school graduate to go to college, and soon we found ourselves facing a shortage of skilled laborers.
Some careers require a college education, such as those in the educational and medical professions. But, what happens when you want new floors installed in your home? Who do you call when your main sewer line is clogged? What do you do when your pool needs resurfacing? These are all necessary skills that not everyone possesses.
Forbes.com recently posted an article that stated, “According to the Department of Labor, the U.S. economy had 7.6 million unfilled jobs, but only 6.5 million people looking for work as of January 2019, and it is more apparent than ever that our country is suffering because of it.” With the incredible shortages we faced in the grocery stores (toilet paper, anyone?) during the height of the pandemic, Americans began to realize that we cannot rely so heavily on importing items from other countries. We will likely see an increase in American production, which will also increase the need for more laborers, such as factory workers and machinists.
