If you live in Florida, then you already know that summer is our rainy season. Our rainy season lasts from May through October. In some areas, September is actually the wettest month even though fall officially begins in September. We all know that rain is a necessity. We need it for crops. It keeps wildfires at bay. And, it keeps our state beautiful, green, and lush.
Although we are used to the rain in Florida, it is always nice to be reminded of tips on how to deal with it. We have a lot of rain and a lot of different types of rain here. We have our sun showers when the sun is shining, but there are just enough rain clouds to bring down some rain. We have our brief afternoon rain which comes and goes in a matter of minutes. We have our thunderstorms that bring lightning and huge claps of thunder. And, we have our torrential downpours which feel like we should be climbing aboard an ark!
So, here are a few reminders of ways to deal with the rain. During the rainy season, you have to literally be prepared for it to rain at any time. A day that starts off sunny and clear can end with a thunderstorm. You can walk into a store with the sun shining and walk out to a downpour. We recommend that you keep umbrellas in strategic places. You should keep one by the front door for the run to the car. You should always keep one in the car in case you are out and about when the rain arrives.
It is also a great idea to keep some kind of hooded jacket in the car even if it isn’t a rain jacket. It can still keep your hair and clothes dry when you have to get from the car into the house or another destination. For men, you may want to keep a ball cap in the car. If your hair gets really messed up, you can always toss it on! Ladies, we recommend that if you have long enough hair, you keep an elastic ponytail holder in your purse or car. If your hair gets wet, you can always throw it up in a bun, braid, or ponytail to “save” it.
It is also a good idea to keep an old towel in the car. It can come in handy for a quick towel dry of your hair, drying your body, or wiping off your seats which get wet as soon as you open the car door!
During the rainy months, we also suggest that you do not leave your car windows down at all when you are not in the car. Also, do not leave your house windows open if you aren’t home. You don’t want to come home from a long day at work to a rain-soaked sofa!
If you have dogs, you may want to keep a towel by the door, so that when they return from “doing their business” you can wipe off any muddy paws. This is also handy for little feet that like mud puddles!
