Now that our weather is warming up, we are all enjoying a little more time outside in the sunshine. You may have already completed your spring cleaning. If so, good for you! Now it’s time to move on to the outside of the house. It’s time to spruce up for spring!
Now is the time to clean up those flower beds. Weeds seem to pop up overnight. Sometimes they actually do! It is annoying and feels like a never-ending chore. There are a couple ways to combat this. First, before doing your planting, place a weed barrier. This usually looks like a black lightweight blanket. These won’t keep out every weed since weeds are VERY determined to sprout. It WILL lessen the number of weeds making it easier to keep your flower beds weeded on a regular basis. You can also purchase weed killer which is usually in the form of a spray to help kill the roots so that the weeds can’t re-grow.
It is important to remove dead leaves and old blooms from plants, bushes, and flowers to allow room for new growth. It also improves the appearance of them making your yard more beautiful. Adding fresh mulch is an easy way to brighten up your flower beds. It adds a nice fresh pop of color without requiring much effort. This time of year many stores have huge sales on their mulch for as little as $1.00 per bag, so keep your eyes on the ads!
If you notice any of your plants, flowers, or trees looking a little worse for wear after this winter, it would be a good idea to add a little fertilizer around their base or plant food that is specific to the type of plant you are trying to revive. As silly as it sounds, studies have been done and proven that talking to your plants really does help! You don’t have to have an in-depth conversation on the meaning of life with your fern, but you can say something like, “Happy spring! I’m feeding you and hope it’s delicious. Grow big and strong!” You can say this quietly so your neighbors don’t hear (and assume you’re crazy), but your plant really can benefit from it.
Sweeping or hosing down the driveway and walkways also help spruce up the outside of the house. They have probably accumulated a layer of dirt or sand and leaves. Washing down the outside of your home’s windows also helps give it a bright, cheerful look. Dirty, grimy windows are not a good look for any home.
Clean off all your patio furniture. You may have had it stored in the shed or garage, but it is still probably dirty and may have cobwebs. Give everything a fresh wash. If your patio table is glass, wash first with water, then use a good glass cleaner and rag to get rid of any streaks. Now your yard is ready for you to sit out there at your clean table, enjoy some iced tea, and look at your fresh flower beds.
