Prepping Your Pool Enclosure for Hurricane Season

Prepping Your Pool Enclosure for Hurricane Season

Believe it or not, it’s that time again!  June 1 was the official start of hurricane season here in Florida.  Following a very active 2024 hurricane season, we are all hoping for a quieter year.  However, it is essential to be prepared, as we never know what each hurricane season has in store.  For those of you with pool enclosures, you have a little extra prepping to do before a big storm.  Prepping your pool enclosure can help you avoid potential damage, saving you time, money, and stress.

Pool enclosures are wonderful as they protect your pool from debris, keep out pests (bugs, not neighbors!), and offer UV protection, saving you money on pool chemicals and protecting your skin.  However, pool enclosures are vulnerable during hurricanes.  Heavy winds can carry large debris that can cause major damage to a pool enclosure.  Not only can screens get torn, but the structure itself can be severely damaged.

This article will look at some key factors for prepping your pool enclosure for hurricane season.  We will discuss the risks to your enclosure, the importance of inspecting your enclosure, reinforcing and securing the structure, preparing the surrounding area, what to do right before the storm, and what to do after the storm.  It may sound like a lot, but following Tripod Aluminum’s simple steps will help protect your enclosure and hopefully save you time and money in the long run.

Understand the Risks

As mentioned above, high winds bring debris during hurricanes.  Flying debris is the enemy of your pool enclosure.  It can tear screens or rip them off completely.  It can dent, bend, and break the structure.  By preparing your enclosure before the storm, you may be able to prevent potential damage.  Doing so can save you money on repairs or replacement.

While your enclosure may be covered by your homeowner’s insurance, it is better if it doesn’t sustain damage than if you have to file a claim.  Unfortunately, Floridians are struggling significantly with the highest premiums for homeowner’s insurance in the United States, particularly those residents who live along the coastlines.  Rates are high, and insurance companies often use a claim as an excuse to raise your rates even higher or to drop your insurance completely.  It is frustrating, to say the least.  So, prevention is the best way to go!

Inspect Your Pool Enclosure

Check for rust or corrosion on the frame.  If Tripod Aluminum built your frame, this won’t be an issue because our frames are made of rust-resistant aluminum. If you aren’t sure what your enclosure’s building material is, then don’t skip this step!

Look for loose bolts, screws, or connections.  You want your enclosure to be as secure and sturdy as possible before the storm arrives.  Tighten all loose connections, and if you need help, give Tripod Aluminum a call.  We can tighten or replace any loose connections.

Examine screens for tears or weak spots.  A weak spot may have frayed screening or areas that look more worn than the rest of the screen.  If you discover any tears or weak spots, Tripod Aluminum can repair them for you to keep your screening strong and as storm-ready as possible.

Reinforce and Secure the Structure

If you are unsure about the structural integrity of your pool enclosure, then call Tripod Aluminum for an inspection.  We will let you know if your pool enclosure’s structure or screening requires any repairs or reinforcement.  If your pool enclosure is old, it may be time to replace it.  If that is not in your budget, then we can do the necessary repairs to get it as storm-ready as possible, but we cannot guarantee it will withstand the storm.

Prepare the Surrounding Area

Store loose items that are kept inside the pool enclosure.  Patio furniture, pool toys, and pool equipment such as brushes and nets can all become flying debris during a storm.  They can easily tear your screens and even damage the enclosure structure.

Trim trees and remove dead branches.  Tree limbs are notorious for tearing screens.  Overhanging branches can be dangerous for your home, as well.  Trim any trees or bushes near the enclosure.  Cut down any dead branches and dispose of them before the storm.

Clear gutters and drains.  To prevent flooding in your yard and pool area, clear gutters and drains.  Standing water can cause damage and mold growth.  It also attracts pests like mosquitoes.

What To Do Right Before the Storm

Shut off the pool equipment.  It can destroy your pool pump and filter if it takes in large storm debris.

Secure access panels to the pool timer and equipment.

Take photos for insurance documentation.  Make sure the photo has a time and date stamp to verify that your pool enclosure was undamaged prior to the storm.

What To Do Right After the Storm

Do a safety check.  Make sure there are no electrical hazards in your yard.  Do not wade into flooded areas where there may be hidden dangers.  Also, be cautious of debris so that you don’t trip or cut yourself.

Document and report damage.  In the unfortunate event of damage to your pool enclosure, home, or outbuildings, use date and time-stamped photos to document damage for your homeowner’s insurance company.  Contact them immediately.

Begin cleanup and call professionals.  If you find damage that requires professionals, then call them as soon as possible.  After large storms, plumbers, electricians, and other tradesmen are often swamped with calls.  If your pool enclosure sustained damage, call Tripod Aluminum.

Summary

Hurricanes in Florida are inevitable.  You can do your best to prepare your home, yard, and pool enclosure for any incoming storm to sustain as little damage as possible.  Inspect your pool enclosure to have any necessary repairs done prior to the storm to make your enclosure strong and secure.  Store loose items, trim trees, and clean gutters to prepare your pool enclosure and the surrounding area.  Shut off and secure the pool equipment.  Take time and date-stamped photos before and after the storm for insurance purposes.
