Preparing Your Pool for Summer Fun

June 20 is the summer solstice…the official first day of summer!  Schools in Florida have already begun summer vacation, you may be planning a summer getaway, and the temperatures have definitely heated up from the mild spring we enjoyed this year.  With summer’s arrival, you may turn your attention to your pool.  What needs to be done to prepare your pool for summer fun?

Built-in pools and above-ground pools both require prep for summer fun.  Properly balancing chemicals, ensuring the pool equipment works, and repairing any damage are a few steps required for pool prep.  Additionally, the installation of a pool enclosure can greatly increase summertime fun in the pool.

Whether you have a built-in pool or an above-ground pool, both require extra attention in the summer.  There are a few simple steps you can follow to get your pool ready for summer.  So, let’s dive into summer pool prep with these tips from Tripod Aluminum!

Built-In Pool Prep

If you have a built-in pool, you have to maintain it year-round.  You don’t drain the thousands of gallons when winter arrives and refill it in the summer as some folks with above-ground pools do.  However, despite your best efforts, when that first wave of summer heat hits, it can really throw your pool for a loop.  All of a sudden, your pool chemicals, especially the chlorine, are dissipating at a rapid rate.  It makes it much more challenging to keep your pool perfectly balanced to maintain that sparkling, inviting water that you love.  So, what should you do?

Get your pool water tested at a pool store.  They will give you a printout explaining what chemicals you need and how much of them to add to your pool to get your pool chemicals balanced.  Do this regularly, monthly at the least, preferably weekly.
Remove all toys from the pool.  They can get in the way of the pool sweeper and small toys or swim goggles can get sucked into the pool sweeper causing it to stop working.  If a toy is really small, it can get sucked into your pool filter system causing a blockage which can become a major issue.  Enjoy all the fun toys while you are in the pool; just remember to remove them when you are done for the day!
A little bonus tip:  If you don’t use a chlorine feeder in your filter system, be sure to use a chlorine floater and keep it full of chlorine tabs.  It seems like a small thing to do, but it makes a big difference in keeping your chlorine at the appropriate level.

Above-Ground Pool Prep

If you have an above-ground pool, you may have maintained it throughout the off-season in which case, you won’t have much to do to prep it for summer.  For in-depth, step-by-step details of how to “open” your above-ground pool for summer, you may want to use this checklist provided by clearcomfort.com. Here are some basic tips to get you started:

Clean your above-ground pool.  Even if you have had it covered, it will probably need a good brushing.  It may be easier to do this after you have filled the pool.
Check for any damage or leaks.  Don’t fill your pool all the way.  Fill it with a couple of inches or even a foot of water.  Then, let it sit and make sure you don’t lose any water before filling it completely.  Prior to this, make sure all plugs are in place!
Make sure your pool equipment is working properly.  Don’t add chemicals until you have checked this.  You don’t want to waste chemicals on a pool that isn’t functioning.
Take your water to a pool store for testing.  Add chemicals per the instructions they give you.

Having a Pool Enclosure Installed

Pool enclosures are a fantastic addition to enhance your pool for summer fun.  Above-ground pools can be sunken or have decks built around them to give them the feel of a built-in pool.  You don’t have to have a built-in pool to enjoy a pool enclosure!  Why should you call Tripod Aluminum to have a pool enclosure installed?

Pool enclosures help maintain the chemical balance of your pools.  They help to block the sun’s UV rays which eat up chlorine in the heat of summer.  You will spend less money on pool chemicals when you have a pool enclosure.
You will save time with a pool enclosure.  Your pool will require less maintenance as you won’t have to deal with balancing and adding chemicals as often, and the pool enclosure keeps out most debris, greatly decreasing time spent cleaning the pool!
Pool enclosures increase your outdoor living space by giving you a pest-free zone to enjoy summer evenings.  As you know, mosquitoes love to feast at night, making it difficult to enjoy time in the backyard.  Now you can enjoy your patio and your pool any time of the day or night!

Summary

Nothing beats summer fun in the pool, but the pool has to be ready first!  Properly balanced chemicals, a clean pool, and pool equipment that works are all part of a summer-ready pool.  A great addition to your pool is a pool enclosure.  It protects your pool by preserving chemicals and keeping out debris.  This will save you time and money.  Tripod Aluminum in Melbourne, FL, has been building quality pool enclosures for over 30 years!  If you are ready to enjoy your pool and outdoor space more than ever before, then contact us today for your free estimate!
