Preparing Your Pool for Summer Fun

June 20 is the summer solstice…the official first day of summer!  Schools in Florida have already begun summer vacation, you may be planning a summer getaway, and the temperatures have definitely heated up from the mild spring we enjoyed this year.  With summer’s arrival, you may turn your attention to your pool.  What needs to be done to prepare your pool for summer fun?

Built-in pools and above-ground pools both require prep for summer fun.  Properly balancing chemicals, ensuring the pool equipment works, and repairing any damage are a few steps required for pool prep.  Additionally, the installation of a pool enclosure can greatly increase summertime fun in the pool.

If you have a built-in pool, you have to maintain it year-round.  You don’t drain the thousands of gallons when winter arrives and refill it in the summer as some folks with above-ground pools do.  However, despite your best efforts, when that first wave of summer heat hits, it can really throw your pool for a loop.  All of a sudden, your pool chemicals, especially the chlorine, are dissipating at a rapid rate.  It makes it much more challenging to keep your pool perfectly balanced to maintain that sparkling, inviting water that you love.  So, what should you do?

● Get your pool water tested at a pool store.  They will give you a printout explaining what chemicals you need and how much of them to add to your pool to get your pool chemicals balanced.  Do this regularly, monthly at the least, preferably weekly.
● Remove all toys from the pool.  They can get in the way of the pool sweeper and small toys or swim goggles can get sucked into the pool sweeper causing it to stop working.  If a toy is really small, it can get sucked into your pool filter system causing a blockage which can become a major issue.  Enjoy all the fun toys while you are in the pool; just remember to remove them when you are done for the day!
● A little bonus tip:  If you don’t use a chlorine feeder in your filter system, be sure to use a chlorine floater and keep it full of chlorine tabs.  It seems like a small thing to do, but it makes a big difference in keeping your chlorine at the appropriate level.

Above-Ground Pool Prep
