Many residents of Melbourne, FL and beyond enjoy the company of a furry friend or two. Cats and dogs are fun companions, and most pet owners know there are certain ways to take care of their pets. From choosing the right brand of dog food to investing in cat toys, owning a pet is certainly a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. To help all the pet owners out there, we have a couple tips on how to take the best possible care of your dogs and cats.
Keep pets well-groomed
No one enjoys the smell of a stinky dog. How frequently you should bathe your dog depends on several factors including age and existing skin conditions, and really comes down to a matter of personal preference. Generally, the rule of thumb is to bathe your dog no more than once per week (unless odor is a problem) and no less than once per month. Be sure to wipe out your dog’s ears as well, since this is where a lot of their odor originates. Don’t forget to brush their teeth to keep their breath fresh and their teeth and gums healthy!
Cats, on the other hand, do not necessarily require bathing unless they get very dirty, have a skin problem, or have fleas. Cats groom themselves with their tongues, so unless your kitty smells or has a skin condition, it’s up to you if you’d like to bathe them.
Fence in your yard
If you don’t already have a fenced-in yard, adding a fence will be an investment both you and your pet will appreciate for years to come. This will save you from having to walk your dog daily, and your pets will enjoy playing outside. You also won’t have to worry about them escaping if the fence you choose is well built. If you have cats that you’d like to let outside without worrying about them roaming, consider building a taller fence than for a dog since cats can jump and climb higher.
