3 Ways to Stay Warm & Healthy This Winter

Winter is the time when you naturally want to slow down and retreat inside with some delicious warm coffee and a nice book. The holidays bring people together and there are many parties to attend that can leave you feeling depleted. It is also the most common time for people to get colds, the flu, and stomach viruses so it’s best to slow down this winter and take time to replenish your body when necessary. Although you won’t have any snow to worry about in Brevard County, Florida, the cold weather could leave you feeling the wintertime blues.

Here are some suggestions on how to stay healthy and cozy this winter:

1. Dress for the weather

Over the winter be mindful of your body temperature. Before you leave the house make sure you take a jacket to keep you warm throughout your day. Generally, you’re not going to be able to wear your normal shorts and a tank top over the winter so be prepared to wear hats, scarves, gloves and warmer clothes to keep your body warm. If you get a chill from the cold air grab something warm to drink such as coffee or tea. In the evening switch out your cold salads for hot soups. Another way to warm up your body is to start moving around. Start your day with a brisk walk to get the blood circulating in your whole body instead of sitting inside watching television.

2. Prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder

If you find yourself feeling depressed this season you aren’t alone. Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD Syndrome is common when you are receiving less sunlight and when you don’t get out of your home as often during the colder winter days. Go outside in the sunshine for a little while each day to get some Vitamin D or open up your blinds or curtains in your house and get as much sunlight as possible. The sunshine gives a natural boost of energy when you’re feeling down.

3. Spend time on your screened porch

Sitting out on your screened-in porch is the perfect way to spend your time when you don’t feel like going far from home. It gives you the benefits of the outdoors while the screen protects you from the elements and mosquitoes. Enjoy a nice, hot beverage, read a book, and relax.

However you spend your time this winter remember to take some time to yourself and slow down. Remember to wear warm winter clothing and get some sunshine to brighten your day. Enjoy some downtime on your screened porch.
