Winter officially begins around December 21 each year. Some years in Florida we greet the beginning of winter with weather temperatures in the high 80s, some years it’s in the 40s. We never know quite what to expect from year to year, but we know that neither extreme will stick around for too long. December tends to be in the low 70s during the day, dipping into the 50s at night. It is pleasant but cool – a perfect mix!
For those of us who live here, we tend to take a break from dips in the ocean unless wearing some kind of spring suit or wet suit, but there are still plenty of things to do here in the winter, particularly while the kids are on their break from school. The beach is still a great place to go even if you don’t go in the water. It’s beautiful, and the sound of the waves hitting the shore is somehow therapeutic, isn’t it? Taking lunch down to the beach, tossing a football or Frisbee around, and just hanging out can make for a great afternoon.
Camping is another great activity during the winter here. Why? It’s not too hot or too cold! Our humidity is usually giving us a little break too. Camping without sweating or freezing – does it get any better than that? There are also fewer bugs during the cooler weather which makes the experience even better. You usually won’t go home covered in mosquito bites like you would in July; although, we still recommend using some type of insect repellant just to be safe.
The theme parks are always an option, but they tend to be busy during the winter break. You may have the usual Florida crowd, plus an influx of people from out of state taking advantage of those couple weeks off of school. But, they are certainly an option. They are also more enjoyable this time of year for the simple fact that you aren’t dying in the sweltering heat and humidity while walking on the blacktop of the amusement parks which make it even hotter. You can comfortably enjoy your day!
If hanging out at home is more your speed, then, by all means, do it! If you prefer to be alone, winter is a great time to sit outside with a book and a hot beverage. If you enjoy having friends or family over, then why not have a game night? Have each person or couple bring over a game, and give them all a try! It usually is a lot of fun and includes a lot of laughter.
