Festive Decorating Ideas for Your Home

Winter is such a fun time of year in Florida.  You have finally stopped sweating walking from your car to the door of the grocery store!  You aren’t freezing cold, but the air has a cooler, refreshing feeling.  Life starts to take on a cozy feeling as store decorations change to warm, festive colors and the feeling of upcoming holiday celebrations is felt.

There are some things you can do at home to help usher in fall and say goodbye to summer until next year.  Even small changes around the house will give it a seasonal feeling.  You do not have to be an interior decorator or spend a fortune to make your house feel like the holidays have arrived.  If you are thinking that you can’t afford to buy elaborate decorations, don’t worry.  There are many discount stores that carry fall decorations at reasonable prices.  Check your local Dollar General.  Drug stores like Walmart, CVS, and Walgreen’s all carry decorations and they often put them on sale, even during the season.  Stores like Hobby Lobby, Ross, and TJ Maxx also carry seasonal decorations.  At the end of the holiday season, you are likely to find them on clearance which is a great time to buy.  You can get more for your money or simply get a couple of items and not pay much at all.  Shopping after the holidays is a great way to grow your decoration supply.

Some inexpensive and simple ways to add touches are things like wax melts and air fresheners.  These usually only cost a couple of dollars.  Of course, you CAN spend more if you choose upscale brands.  That is entirely up to you.  Candles usually cost a bit more, but again, they come in a variety of styles and prices.  Our sense of smell is a strong one that is often linked to memories.  Perhaps you like the smell of pumpkin pie during the fall or hot maple syrup.  The above-mentioned items are great ways to keep those smells going in your house all day long.

Throw pillows are another fun way to add a decorative touch.  You may like themed ones that feature snowflakes or sayings.  Or, you may choose simply to go with a winter color scheme.  Pillows can be expensive.  Pillow covers are an alternative to buying new pillows.  You simply put your existing throw pillows inside the cover and suddenly you have Christmas-themed pillows!  These are usually less expensive than buying new pillows and they can easily be folded up and stored in a closet with your other pillowcases.  They take up much less space than pillows.
